John Kitzhaber is an avid supporter of Oregon’s assisted suicide law. He vetoed a budget
that would have eliminated state funding for abortion. He also vetoed a bill that would have
required that parents be notified before their daughter received an abortion. When he was
president of the Oregon Senate he allowed passage of a law that made it a felony to block
access to an abortion clinic. He is one of the most pro-abortion governors in the United States.
Representative Mitch Greenlick was the chief sponsor of a failed bill that would have required Oregon
taxpayers to fund human cloning. He consistently receives a 100% rating from NARAL for his pro-abortion advocacy.
Carolyn Tomei filed a complaint against ORTL Executive Director Gayle Atteberry with the
Capitol Club for allegedly distributing false information when Oregon Right to Life shared
information with the legislature about health risks associated with abortion. The complaint was
dismissed since Tomei was unable to support it with any evidence. She is a fierce opponent of
the unborn’s right to life and pro-life free speech rights.
In 2011 Senator Chip Shields was the Chair of the committee on general government, consumer and
small business protection. He introduced a committee bill that would require pro-life pregnancy
resource centers to state all of the services that they do not provide in all of their advertisements,
at the entrance to their building, and in any waiting areas. This law which is targeted only at
pregnancy resource centers in effect would require pro-life centers to encourage women to go to
abortion clinics.
In 2006, Representative Lew Frederick appeared in a television advertisement opposing a law that would enable parents to be notified if their child was undergoing an abortion.
Representative Chris Harker refused to meet with a student who lived in his district because the student went to
Oregon Right to Life’s Camp Joshua.
Representative Mary Nolan is the founder of Oregon’s branch of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL Oregon). She is currently running for Portland City Council after 10 years as a state representative from southwest Portland. She received the first-ever Marilyn Epstein Pro-Choice Champion Award from Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in Oregon.
Last session, Senator Laurie Monnes Anderson blocked a bill that would have provided minimal state regulations for abortion clinics to bring them in line with other ambulatory surgical centers. Although abortion is the least regulated surgical practice in Oregon, and although a number of women recently have died in abortion clinics around the country, Laurie seemed to care more about her pro-abortion allies than the safety of Oregon women. Laurie also called a hearing on Chip Shields bill targeting pro-life pregnancy resource centers. She required pregnancy resource centers from all over the state to send representatives to Salem to explain why the government should not require pro-life centers to advertise against themselves on behalf of the abortion industry. She also has consistently had a 100% rating from NARAL.
